New guy finished first pistol build
« on: March 13, 2016, 01:17:00 PM »

First post on here, I just recently finished my 3rd 80% build, this one a 300 blackout AR pistol.  Used a Daytona tactical raw 80% and piece mealed the rest of the build off seemingly everywhere online, finished it off with a home cerakote in MAGPUL FDE.  Took it to the range and with Walmart Remington 300 black it operated very good, failure to kickback on hexmags on the last round was the only problem I had.  Hoping to remedy this with better ammo.

Thanks for the kind words.  The flash hider is the M16A1 style three prong.  I'm not very happy with it so I'm in the market to replace it

NICE BUILD.
Have you tried it with other magazines to see if the bolt hold open works with them?
It may not be the ammo.
There also may be an issue with the bolt catch. There are different styles.
All are not created equal.

And I'm jealous. Funds and time have stalled my builds.

Thanks!  On HK clear mags, and GI mags with MAGPUL followers the hold open works, but barely.  I think it's either the ammo or a slight under gassing situation. I'm hoping it's just ammo, I have 1,000 rounds on the way from ozark ordnance and I'm hoping they remedy the situation.

I feel your pain on the funds, I built all 3 of mine within the last 12 months and it's stretching my budget.

I also get the feeling it's a bolt catch issue. Is there a large difference in the amount the bolt catch sticks up with a mag vs how far it sticks up when you manually press it?

Bolt catch seems normal as can be, pics of catch down, up by hand, and up with the hexmag follower

Looks very nice. What's the availability of ammo and the cost?

I haven't bought any lately but I generally pay about 60 cents per round for 300 Blackout.

I just got 1,000 rounds from ozark ordnance, with shipping about 45 per round, they are reloads but the quality is great.  You can get new stock Remington 147 grain for about $16 at Wally World

Well guys, it was all gas related.  I took off the gas block and noticed the alignment was slightly off, I don't know if it was a miss drilled tube, or block, but replaced both and all is fantastic now.  The mags I had issues with are no longer having any problem.

Range time today was 100% successful

That's good to hear. Is that ammo from Ozark still working well for you?

The ozark has given me zero issue so far.  For the price I'm amazed, since the gas system was sorted I only ran hornady and the ozark, both with zero issue.  If your on the fence about it they sell 50 round packs that with shipping are still less per round than Walmart.  Huge savings when you get higher in quantity.
